After Corporal Tahar had passed the Path to Mulandir, he and his group finally made it to the legendary city of Mulandir. Isgrimm was amazed and exhilarated because his life-long dream had finally come true. After having gone a bit further, the group found the remnants of the shapers' existence: One of the Xarlonthep Ghost Watchers.

The Ghost Watcher's eternal duty[]

Isgrimm recognized the watcher's language as old shaper words and attempted to converse with the being. He then told the Corporal, that these beings were eternal guardians made to keep the city safe. They meant no harm, unless one would threaten the integrity of the city itself.

It is every shaper city's core... it is where they drew the energy for their constructions from, where they created their devices and where they stored their knowledge.

The group then marched towards the northeast and was forced to fight a couple undead fighters on the way. Yria wondered who they might have been. Isgrimm was not sure but it might have been intruders from the ancient Hybernian Empire.

Entering the Nexus[]

The Nexus building stood in the center of Mulandir but was surrounded by a magic barrier. Isgrimm stated that the barrier was unbreachable and that they would need to find another way. Yria proposed to go back to the ghost watcher to ask about the barrier.

The ghost watcher explained that the four Xarlonthep Ghost Watchers were fueling the barrier with their life force. In order to deactivate the barriers, the four guardians needed to be defeated and destroyed first. Although Isgrimm was extremely unhappy about having to destroy shaper-made remnants, the group proceeded and exterminated the four guardians and imprinted their own rune on the godstones to relinquish them from their duty.

After the Corporal had obtained all four shards from the Xarlonthep Ghost Watchers the barrier dispersed and the way to the Nexus building was open. However a final guardian made its appearance: A Xarlonthep Construct. The being was an extremely powerful golem that attacked Corporal Tahar and his companions with its steel blades. After the golem was defeated the path to the Nexus could finally be taken.

Reactivating the Nexus[]

Inside the Nexus the group marched straight through and was able to get access to the core. Isgrimm then found the so-called Heart of the Nexus. This was the place where the shapers once used their archfire to fuel their cities and their experiments. Isgrimm also found out one more thing: The shapers seemed to have created a telepathic connection between themselves. This Collective Subconsciousness was one of the reasons why the shaper empire was so powerful because it was in complete unison.

The shapers are extinct, so no. But it might be someone else using Shaper magic, or a sort of "mental echo". The memories of the dead. [...] We could connect us to the collective subconscious of an extinct race - which then again could help us to understand the song and its origin.
Isgrimm sharing his theory about the song

Isgrimm followed that assumption and stated that the Song of the Wight might be an echo of a previous shaper. It could have been trapped within the Nexus even after the shaper had died and then could be heard occasionally by the magically gifted people. However this theory could only be proved once the core would return to full power.

While he had found that out, he also noticed that the rune given to Corporal Tahar by Rondar Lacaine was probably made by the shapers too and not just a gift from Aonir. He was able to combine the rune with the shards obtained from the Xarlonthep Ghost Watchers.

I - uhm - joined it with the shards we got from the ghost watchers. I'm guessing that caused some kind of magical reaction, when you as the rune owner touched it. I think the rune got alot sronger now.

During a previous examination of the building Yria had found a map with two markings on it. The shapers seemed to have brought two Stones of the Essence to areas outside of the city.  With these stones the nexus could be brought back to full power, but the areas were dangerous and the Corporal's companions told him, that they would need allies first, to get there safely. This would start many follow-up quests such as the Gaining Allies quest as well as the companion-based quests such as The Windwall Way, Echoes of the Past, Miles To Go Before I Sleep and many more.
